New software does not create a new way of working by itself. If the process is unclear, a system only digitizes the confusion. The first step of digital transformation should be a description of current work: who does it, where data goes and where it stalls.
Technology choices come after that. Sometimes existing systems only need to be connected. Sometimes a new piece must be built. Sometimes the sequence of work must change before a line of code is written.
This approach helps organizations avoid two extremes: change that is too large to control, or technology investment that does not change operations. The aim is a step specific enough to measure and solid enough to continue.
